In the Footsteps of Al-Andalus
Walk along Moorish tracks, irrigation channels, and Mudéjar landscapes in the Almijara Mountains.
Staying in the beautiful town of Frigilina, at the Millers boutique hotel, you’ll discover the Moorish legacy of the Almijara Mountains. Old paths connect dramatic limestone hills, terraced slopes, and white villages. At a relaxed pace, we follow these historic tracks across ridges and valleys, linking springs, fields, and settlements.
One of the highlights of these walks is the acequias, Moorish irrigation channels that still bring mountain water to orchards and terraces. These channels often run next to the paths, showing how water shaped the land and made the mountains a sustainable place to live.
We walk through villages like Frigiliana, Cómpeta, Árchez, and Canillas de Albaida. Here, Mudéjar architecture, such as old minarets turned into church towers, decorative brickwork, and narrow streets, shows the lasting influence of Al-Andalus.
These mountain walks help you truly experience the area. As you follow the paths, see the flowing water, and explore villages shaped by centuries of history, you discover the Moorish heritage of southern Spain.
How difficult?
Although the walk is graded as moderate, there are prolonged stretches along narrow irrigation channels where the path is exposed, with steep drops to one side. Good balance, confident footing, and comfort with moderate exposure are essential.
Our daily walks typically range from 16 to 18 kilometres, with an ascent of approximately 700 metres.
